Last night, majority of America was all in their feelings. Our beloved President Obama, who served the people of this country for eight years, said goodbye. He packed McCormick Place in Chicago to thank supporters and lay out his accomplishments over the past eight years. He went in on a variety of issues that basically set the tone for how these next four years will be set up. Listening him to him speak and watching him tear-up, made so many people tear-up as well.
Yes We Can. Yes We Did. Yes We Can.
His speech urged unity, despite the fact that the new powers that be are helping to promote a racial divide. He spoke on the attempts to disband our democracy. When discussing how democracy should work, he quoted Harper Lee’s character Atticus Finch, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view; until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” This goes across the board, from race to race, generation to generation.
He also spoke about opinions… and how people want to hear what they want to hear and believe what they want to believe. Regardless of the facts presented, people still have a tendency to believe whatever they want. He spoke about the possibility of Climate Change becoming a real problem in the near future. He laid out the warnings and the hope he has for future generations to help facilitate change and protect our country.
Then came the thank yous… His heartfelt ode to Michelle Obama started the tears. He praised his wife for “Taking on a role you didn’t ask for and you made it your own with grace, and with grit, and with style and good humor. You made the White House a place that belongs to everybody.” His admiration for the First Lady was evident and it really was a beautiful display of love. He praised his daughter, for being his pride and joy, and his VP Joe Biden for being the “first and best decision he made as a nominee.” For all the people wondering, it was confirmed that his other daughter Sasha, stayed behind to study for an exam the next day.
