Black History Month is an important time to celebrate the achievements and culture of African Americans. Aside from the arts, music, and literature presentations, brands have decided to pay homage to Black Culture as well. Nike launches an annual Black History Month (BHM) Collection and every year it gets bigger and better. The collection started with one Air Force 1 colorway and continues to get bigger & better every time. This year, it expands to include various shoe silhouettes and even apparel. This collection is not just about honoring people and their achievements. Nike wants to utilize sports to help encourage community action to create positive change…especially in these trying times.
The 2017 BHM collection utilizes black, white, gold, and a marbling technique that emphasizes coming together. The gold color pops are a symbol of the aspiration of unity.
There are three signature basketball silhouettes in this collection. The LeBron 14, the Kyrie 3, and the KD 9. Other shoes in this collection include the Serena Williams’ Nike Flare, the Nike Lunar Epic and Jordan Trunner. An Air Force 1 Hi for men, AF1 Upstep for women, and special-edition Air Jordan 1s. Apparel for the 2017 collection includes an MVP jacket and an “EQUALITY” Tee for men and women.
Nike supports a variety of community-based organizations around the world. The Black History Month Collection helps to provide financial support to Nike’s Ever Higher Fund which helps bring a variety of services including mentorship and sports to a variety of young people in their community. They also added two new partnerships with MENTOR and PeacePlayers International. For more information on both please visit www.peaceplayersintl.org and www.mentoring.org
