VH1 Takes It Back To The Old School With “The Breaks”

VH1 came through when they launched their original movie, The Breaks, last year. Set in the 1990s when hip hop music was at its best, it chronicles the life of three friends who have a common bond in music. With the wild success of the movie, they went ahead and made it a series. The season kicks off this month with the first episode set to air on Monday.

There have been a bevy of events and screening around New York City last week. The actors definitely set the tone with their press runs, interviews, and appearances. The series picks up exactly where the movie left off and continues to move through what many call ‘The Golden Era’ of Hip Hop. The cast did an excellent job settling into their roles to deliver this storyline. Mack Wilds, Afton Williamson, David Call, and Wood Harris create a very interesting cast of characters. Wilds and Harris used to co-exist on HBO’s “the Wire” so we already know what their talents are capable of. There is a sense of passion with these roles and the vibe of the 90s was delivered with precision.

We strongly suggest seeing the movie if you plan on getting into the series. VH1 made it easy to catch up with their library of clips and teasers. Press play above to preview the first episode and be sure to tune in to VH1 on Monday at 9pm for the season premiere.
