Everybody is familiar with the band Maroon 5 and their steady flow of hits. PJ Morton, one of the members of Maroon 5, has decided to step outside of the band and go the solo route. Not only can PJ play a variety of instruments but his vocals are on point. His highly anticipated solo project Gumbo is due out in April and he dropped the first single yesterday.
‘Claustrophobic’ was exclusively released on Solange’s Saint Heron site, ahead of the album release next month. He told Saint Heron:
“I’m an artist who has chosen, outside of being a part of Maroon 5, to follow a path that is not necessarily the most popular one. Those in positions of power are usually trying to adjust you and tailor you to fit what they would like to sell to the masses. This was at a time where I was going around to different labels, kind of letting them listen to my music, and it was at that point where I realized what was most important to me. Yes – I want a lot of people to hear my music. Yes – I want to play huge venues. But I don’t want to do it at the expense of not being who I am or at the expense of not saying what I want to say. That is basically where this song came from. For me, it became the anthem for the dreamer and a message to all of the doubters.”
This particular song was heavily inspired by Morton’s experience with the music industry as he started his solo artist journey. He felt that his creativity and artistry was being limited and those experiences led to this soulful, track. The song gets you to vibe in the first thirty seconds and keeps your head nodding the entire time. The lyrics are intense as they accurately reflect his experience with the industry. Not only does he sing, but he spits too. Press play on the Soundcloud link above and look for PJ Morton’s Gumbo to drop in April 2017.
