It’s no secret that Michelle Obama is a household name. She is everybody’s friend and mentor (in their head) and her presence is sorely missed in the White House. Mrs. Obama is big on higher education and supports all things education related. Her own daughter was accepted into Harvard and will be starting in the Fall of 2017. Mrs. Obama is a fixture in the younger generation as she continues her public appearances at their events and even writing a feature for FADER Magazine. While assisting her own children, he’s helping other young teens get to college as well. Imagine opening a college application and seeing a recommendation letter from Michelle Obama. The credibility of her name recommending anything speaks volumes. Word on the street is Mrs. O inked college recommendation letters for Yara Shahidi.
Actress and teenage activist Yara Shahidi plays Zoey on Blackish. She is also on her way to college. She’s very open about her education as she shows her studying processes and exam triumphs on Instagram. She works while going to school and she makes it look easy. Studying for AP classes while learning lines for the show have got to be tough. Michelle Obama lends her a lot of support when it comes to her education. She even cheered her on during AP Exam season and they sat together on a panel for International Day of the Girl.
“I know when Malia Obama announced [she was deferring], she got a lot of slack, but I feel like what’s interesting is I know so many people that are deferring,” she said. “It’s more than to just roam around or just sit down and stare at a wall, but it will also give me an opportunity to work.”
Shahidi sat down for an interview with W Magazine and she gave her insight on deferring a year, her relationship with Mrs. Obama, and her desire to get her life and career in check before heading to college. This Iranian-American/African-American teenager is “woke” beyond her years. She can put many adults to shame with her knowledge of the world and what’s happening in it.
Check out her full interview here and look for Ms. Shahidi on Instagram and Blackish, which airs Wednesday nights on ABC @ 9p.m.
