Notable African Americans like Dorothy West and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. called Oak Bluffs home for the summer. As time went on, the area’s popularity increased and continued to draw people with its charm. Word on the street is that The Obamas will be kicking back in Martha’s Vineyard for vacation before summer’s end, which will definitely elevate the traffic pattern for the area.
Aside from the sand & surf that allows for popular summer activities, there are shops, restaurants, and a selection of cultural, sightseeing, and historical tours to choose from. The African American Trail exhibits markers around the town that highlight various moments in African American history. The Smithsonian Museum of African-American History and Culture is committed to opening an exhibition titled Power of Place. Set to open in September, this permanent exhibit will highlight the stories of the lives of African Americans who have taken to Oak Bluffs.
There are a few weeks left to summer so if you’re still looking for a place to kick back and relax, Martha’s Vineyard should be on your radar. You can get to Oaks Bluff via train, plane, and automobile. Getting there has gotten even easier now that there is a ferry that departs every Friday from New York City and returns on Sunday. The perfect way to orchestrate a last minute vacay.
